The definition
BaZi (八字) means “eight characters”. In English it is also called the Four Pillars of Destiny, because the 8 characters stand in 4 pairs, like 4 columns. It is a Chinese system that reads personality and life patterns from the exact date and time you were born.
Each pair has a sky sign on top: one of 10 images such as the Tree, the Sun or the Rain. Below it sits an animal sign (the animals are the Chinese zodiac: Rat, Ox, Tiger and the rest). Together, the 8 characters give a mix of the five elements that describes your nature.
How BaZi works
Western astrology reads where the planets were. BaZi reads the five elements through the Chinese sun calendar. In that calendar a new month begins when the sun reaches a new season, not on the 1st. Your birth moment gives four pairs of characters:

The top character of your day pair matters most. Classical books call it the Day Master (日主). We call it your core element, because it is the element that stands for you, for example “Yin Water, the rain”. Everything else in the chart is read in relation to it.
The five elements
Everything in BaZi turns on five elements, and each one feeds the next: Wood feeds Fire, like dry logs keeping a fire alive. Fire feeds Earth, as it burns down to ash, and ash becomes soil. Earth feeds Metal, like gold and iron growing deep in the ground. Metal feeds Water, like dew gathering on cool metal. Water feeds Wood, like rain waking up a garden.
Your chart is a mix of all five. We count the 8 visible characters and the elements hiding inside each animal sign. Read about each one: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water.
The forces in your chart
Every other character in your chart pulls on your core element in one of a few ways: it supports you, you create it, you shape it, or it shapes you. Classical books call these the Ten Gods. We call them the forces in your chart, with plain names such as the Leader, the Warrior, the Creator and the Rebel.
Your birth month decides which force is strongest. Your core element plus that strongest force leads to one of 80 guardian spirits, 8 for each core element. A guardian spirit is one of 80 characters that sum up your chart, such as the Water Seer or the Fire Creator.

BaZi is not fortune telling
BaZi does not predict events or promise outcomes, and it says nothing about health, money or medicine. We treat it as a tool for self-reflection, closer to a personality model than to a horoscope. It is a way to look at your habits, strengths and blind spots with fresh eyes.
