How core elements work
Day Master (日主, rì zhǔ) is the classical name for your core element: the sky sign on top of your day pair. It stands for the temperament you start with, before upbringing and choices add their layers. The 10 sky signs cover the five elements in 2 forms each: Yang (outward, active) and Yin (inward, receptive).

Jia 甲
The tall tree is ambitious, upright and always growing. You stand firm on your principles and reach for long-term goals, and others shelter under you. The catch: a tree that refuses to bend can break in a storm.

Yi 乙

Geng 庚

Yin Water: the rain
Gui 癸
The rain is intuitive, caring and quietly changes things. You work through small, steady touches rather than force, and people open up to you. The catch: you soak up other people's moods, and that wears you down.

Core element plus strongest force
Your core element tells you what you are made of. How it shows depends on the forces in your chart: the ways every other character pulls on you. Your birth month decides which force is strongest.
10 core elements times 8 forces gives the 80 guardian spirits, each with its own strengths, blind spots and patterns at work and in love.
Two tall-tree charts share a core of growth and principle. With the Warrior force, the tree becomes the Wood Skybreaker, driven by pressure and ambition. With the Leader force it becomes the Wood Guardian, steady and principled. The sword works the same way: Warrior makes the Metal Disruptor, Leader makes the Metal Commander.

How to find your core element
Your core element is not your birth year or zodiac animal. It comes from the day you were born, counted in an old 60-day cycle (六十甲子) that has run without a break for thousands of years. That cycle does not line up with the Western calendar in any simple way, so you need a calculator or an almanac.
One detail: old schools disagree about births between 11 PM and midnight. Some start the next day at 11 PM. We keep the day until midnight and explain why on the methodology page. If you were born in that hour, your exact time matters.
