Five elements shape your chart.
Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. Each one feeds another and tames (holds back) another, and everyone carries all five in a different mix. Chinese stargazers even named the five planets after them.
Fire
Fire feeds Earth, as it burns down to ash, and ash becomes soil.
Fire tames Metal, like a blacksmith's forge softening steel.
Around the circle, each element feeds the next: Wood feeds Fire, Fire feeds Earth, Earth feeds Metal, Metal feeds Water, and Water feeds Wood. Each one also tames another: Wood tames Earth, Earth tames Water, Water tames Fire, Fire tames Metal, and Metal tames Wood.

- We read your chart with the classical method written down in China about a thousand years ago, the one most BaZi readers still use today.
- Your real birth time
- Clocks round time off to the nearest time zone, but the sun doesn't. Tell us the city you were born in and we adjust the hour to where the sun really was.
- Months that follow the sun
- In BaZi a new month begins when the sun reaches a new season, not on the 1st, and the year begins in early February. That's why someone born on January 20 counts as the year before.

- BaZi 八字
- Literally “eight characters”: the year, month, day and hour of your birth, each written as two Chinese characters.
- Four Pillars 四柱
- Another name for the same chart: the four pairs of characters standing side by side.
- Day Master 日主
- What we call your core element: the top character of your day pair.
- Heavenly stems 天干 and earthly branches 地支
- The 10 “sky signs” and 12 “animal signs” (the Chinese zodiac animals) that make up the 8 characters.
- Ten Gods 十神
- The forces in your chart: how each other character relates to your core element.
- Ziping method 子平法
- The classical school of reading, named after Xu Ziping of the Song dynasty.
- True solar time 真太陽時
- Clock time corrected for your birthplace's longitude.
- Solar terms 節氣
- The sun's 24 seasons. Each month starts at one of them.
- Stroke order 筆順
- The book writes each character the way a calligrapher would, stroke by stroke, in the traditional order.
