In the Chinese metaphysical system known as BaZi (八字) or Four Pillars of Destiny, your personality is shaped by the elemental forces present at the exact moment of your birth. Your Day Master — the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar — determines your core element identity: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, or Water. But your Day Master alone doesn't tell the full story.
The Ten Gods (十神) describe how the other elements in your chart relate to your Day Master — whether they support, challenge, produce, or control you. Your dominant Ten God pattern shapes how your core element expresses itself in the world. When Day Master meets dominant pattern, it creates your archetype.
How the 40 archetypes work
There are 10 Day Masters (two per element — Yang and Yin) and 10 Ten God patterns. In theory, this creates 100 combinations. In practice, some combinations share the same element relationship, reducing the meaningful set to 40 distinct archetypes — 8 per element.
For example, a Yang Fire (丙) Day Master combined with the Eating God (食神) pattern produces The Blaze Creator— someone who channels fire's radiant energy through creative expression. The same Yang Fire Day Master with a Seven Killings (七殺) pattern becomes The Solar Conqueror— someone who harnesses fire's intensity through competitive drive.
