Step 1: Find Your Four Pillars

Every BaZi chart begins with four pillars derived from your birth year, month, day, and hour. Each pillar is a vertical pair: a Heavenly Stem (天干) on top and an Earthly Branch(地支) below. The Heavenly Stems cycle through ten values, and the Earthly Branches cycle through twelve — producing the “eight characters” that give BaZi its name (八字 literally means “eight characters”).

Think of each pillar as a window into a different domain of life. The Year Pillar reflects your relationship to society and ancestors.
