1. Find your 4 pairs
A BaZi chart (also called a Chinese birth chart or Four Pillars chart) turns your birth date and time into 8 characters standing in 4 columns. Each column is a pair, and classical books call a pair a pillar. If BaZi is new to you, start with what is BaZi?
Each pair has a sky sign on top and an animal sign below. There are 10 sky signs (each one an element, like the tall tree or the rain) and 12 animal signs (the Chinese zodiac animals).

2. Find your core element
The sky sign on top of your day pair is your core element. Classical books call it the Day Master (日主). It stands for you, and every other character is read in relation to it. There are 10, one for each element in its Yang (outward) or Yin (inward) form:

3. Read your element mix
Next, count how the five elements spread across all 8 characters, including the elements hiding inside each animal sign. Some charts lean hard on one element. Others are evenly spread.
The key question is whether your core element is strong or weak. That is not about you as a person. It says how much support your element gets in the chart. Your birth season counts most: an element born in its own season starts out strong.
A strong core element
Your element shows up often and gets plenty of support. You tend to be self-reliant and sure of your direction. The chart usually likes elements that give your strength somewhere to go: things you create and things you build.
A weak core element
Your element appears rarely or gets little support. You tend to be adaptable, a good collaborator and resourceful. The chart likes elements that feed you and people like you. Weak does not mean bad.
The mix also shows what comes easily. A chart rich in Water may point to intuition and depth. One heavy in Fire, to charisma. One with very little Earth may find steadiness and follow-through harder.
4. Find the strongest force
Every other character pulls on your core element in its own way. Classical books call these 10 pulls the Ten Gods (十神). We call them the forces in your chart. Each element can meet you in 2 ways: with the same Yin or Yang as you, or the opposite. That gives 10:

Which one matters most? Under the classical rules, your birth month decides. The force hiding in your month's animal sign, especially when it also appears on top of one of your pairs, becomes the strongest force in your chart. If not, another element hiding in that month's animal sign takes over, as long as it also appears on top of one of your pairs. When the month holds your own element, another force that appears on top of a pair leads instead. A Warrior chart tends to read as intense and driven. A Creator chart leans toward making things. 5. Meet your guardian
Your core element plus your strongest force leads to your guardian spirit: one of 80, 8 for each core element. Each has its own strengths, blind spots, and notes on work and love. Three examples:
A guardian is a starting point, not a box. Two people with the same guardian still differ in element mix, in their other forces and in the timing of their 10-year chapters. Meet all 80 guardians.
6. Your 10-year chapters
A chart is not frozen. After the 4 birth pairs come 10-year chapters (classical name: luck pillars, 大運). Each chapter brings new elements into play and shifts your balance for a decade.
Picture a weak Fire core element entering a Wood chapter: Wood feeds Fire, like dry logs keeping a fire alive, so it is often a decade of growth and confidence. A Water chapter tames Fire, so it may feel like pressure instead. This is an advanced step. The five above come first.
Common mistakes when reading a chart
Relying on the birth year
“Water Tiger” or “Fire Monkey” from your birth year alone is the Chinese zodiac, not BaZi. The zodiac uses 1 pair. BaZi uses all 4.
Ignoring the birth hour
A reading without the hour is still useful, but the hour adds 2 of your 8 characters. If you can, check your birth certificate or ask family.
Thinking a weak core element is bad
Weak only means less support for your element. It often describes adaptable, team-minded people. Strength in BaZi is about balance, not being better.
Treating BaZi as fortune telling
BaZi names patterns and tendencies, not fixed outcomes. We use it for self-awareness, closer to a personality model than to a horoscope.
