How Elemental Fate calculates a BaZi chart

When you enter your birth date and time, Elemental Fate converts your Gregorian calendar date into the traditional Chinese calendar system. This conversion produces four pillars — Year, Month, Day, and Hour — each composed of a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch. Together, these eight characters form your BaZi (八字) chart.

The conversion accounts for solar terms (節氣) to determine the correct month boundaries, which differ from the Gregorian calendar. This is a critical step that many simplified calculators skip, leading to inaccurate month pillar assignments.

How the Four Pillars are generated

The Chinese calendar uses 10 Heavenly Stems (天干) and 12 Earthly Branches (地支) arranged in a repeating 60-unit cycle known as the Sexagenary Cycle. Each pillar is one Stem-Branch pair:

How your Day Master is identified

The Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar is your Day Master (日主) — the single most important element in your chart. It represents your core identity, temperament, and the lens through which you experience the world.

There are 10 possible Day Masters, one for each Heavenly Stem: Yang Wood, Yin Wood, Yang Fire, Yin Fire, Yang Earth, Yin Earth, Yang Metal, Yin Metal, Yang Water, and Yin Water. Each carries distinct personality characteristics rooted in the nature of its element and polarity.

How Five Elements balance is interpreted

Elemental Fate counts the elemental distribution across all eight characters in your chart (4 Heavenly Stems + hidden elements within the 4 Earthly Branches). This produces a Five Elements balance profile showing the relative strength of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water in your chart.

Elements that are abundant represent your natural strengths and tendencies. Elements that are weak or absent indicate areas where you may need to develop consciously or seek support. Seasonal strength (the element of the month you were born in) also influences the overall balance.

How Ten Gods patterns are mapped

The Ten Gods (十神) describe the relationship between your Day Master and every other element in your chart. Each relationship type represents a different life theme:

• Rob Wealth & Friend — peers, competition, confidence
• Eating God & Hurting Officer — creativity, expression, output
• Direct Wealth & Indirect Wealth — finances, relationships, stability
• Direct Officer & 7 Killings — authority, discipline, ambition
• Direct Resource & Indirect Resource — knowledge, support, nurturing

The dominant Ten God in your chart — the one with the strongest presence — determines your primary life theme and behavioral pattern.

Why Elemental Fate uses 40 archetypes

In theory, 10 Day Masters multiplied by 10 Ten Gods produces 100 possible combinations. However, in practice, certain dominant patterns emerge more frequently and meaningfully. Elemental Fate uses 40 representative archetypes — 10 Day Masters combined with the 4 most common dominant Ten Gods patterns for each — to create a focused, accessible personality system.

Each archetype combines an elemental identity (your Day Master) with a life theme (your dominant Ten God). For example, a Yang Fire Day Master with an Eating God dominance becomes “The Blaze Creator” — someone whose fiery core expresses itself through creative output and bold self-expression.

BaZi is a traditional framework developed over centuries of observation and philosophy, not a scientific measurement instrument. The archetypes and element analysis provided by Elemental Fate are designed for self-reflection and personality insight, not for clinical assessment or life prediction.
