What the Chinese zodiac is
The Chinese zodiac is a 12-year cycle in which each year is assigned an animal: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. Your animal depends only on the year you were born.
It is used across East Asia for festivals, casual personality talk and quick compatibility checks. Most people know their animal the way Western readers know their sun sign: a fun starting point, not a full reading.
What BaZi is
BaZi, the Chinese art of reading your birth moment (also called the Four Pillars of Destiny), uses your birth year, month, day and hour to write 8 characters in 4 pairs. Each pair has a sky sign on top and an animal sign below. Together they give your mix of the five elements.
The sky sign on top of your day pair is your core element: it stands for you. Every other character pulls on it in its own way, which gives the forces in your chart, and your birth month decides which force is strongest. That is far more than one animal can describe.

Can you use both?
Yes, and you already do: your zodiac animal is the animal sign of your year pair, so every BaZi chart includes it.
One detail differs from popular use. In BaZi the year changes at the start of spring, around February 4, not at Lunar New Year. So people born in late January or early February sometimes have a different animal than they expect.
Which one should I use?
For a quick, casual description, the zodiac is fine. For self-understanding (strengths, blind spots, how you work and relate), BaZi gives a much fuller picture. The zodiac is the headline. BaZi is the article.
