What If I Don't Know My Birth Time?

Missing your birth hour doesn't mean you can't explore your BaZi chart. Here's what still works and how to fill in the gaps.

You can still calculate your BaZi chart without knowing your exact birth time. Your Year, Month, and Day Pillars will be accurate — and your Day Master (the most important element in your chart) does not depend on birth time. You'll only miss the Hour Pillar.

What You Can Still Calculate

Without birth time, three of your four pillars are fully intact: the Year Pillar, Month Pillar, and Day Pillar. Together, these contain six of the eight characters in a standard BaZi chart.

Most importantly, your Day Master — the single most defining element in your chart — is determined by your birth date, not your birth time. Your core identity, natural strengths, and fundamental personality traits are all accessible without knowing the hour.

What You'll Miss

The Hour Pillar reveals your inner world — subconscious drives, private desires, and patterns that tend to emerge later in life. It also contributes two elements to your chart's overall balance.

Without it, some nuances of your Ten Gods pattern may be incomplete, and your Five Elements distribution could be slightly different from your true chart. But the core reading remains meaningful and accurate.

Ways to Estimate Your Birth Time

Ask your parents or relatives

The most direct source. Even a rough answer like "early morning" or "around dinnertime" helps.

Check your birth certificate

Many birth certificates include the time of birth, especially hospital births.

Request hospital records

If the birth certificate doesn't include time, the hospital may have delivery records on file.

Use a two-hour window

BaZi uses two-hour blocks (shichen). If you know you were born "in the afternoon," that narrows it to 2-3 possible Hour Pillars.
